Salty vs. Sweet: The Dish On Bake Sales

As of now, there will be no more bake sales for the remainder of this school year. There has been talk around the school about whether or not bake sales will be allowed next year. While there are several benefits of having bake sales, there are also some downsides to having them. Do not fear though, we have you covered for all you need to know about the pros and cons to bake sales and how the faculty and staff feel about them.

One growing problem that is leaving teachers feeling more salty than sweet about bake sales is that there continues to be students that work the bake sales and skip class without informing their teachers that they will not be there.

We asked all of the SCHS faculty and staff to give us their opinions on bake sales. Here is some of the feedback we got back:

Mrs. Hance said, “I think they could be a lot better, but it is always very distracting in terms of the students running them. Students buying from them doesn't tend to be a problem.”

Ms. Plaster said, “Students have become very disrespectful and do not show up to class because they are working the bake sale. This should be done during a study hall, or with specific permission. Workers should be limited to two students at a time.”

Mrs. Wakefield said, “I have no preference as I don't usually allow students to leave during my class to go to the bake sales. They have other times that they can do this.”

Mr. Russo said, “Too many and not good during Lent!”

Although we did not get a lot of responses, this may mean that there is more neutrality than expected on feelings about bake sales.
