Captain Marvel Makes “Herstory” During Women’s History Month

After a stellar opening weekend at the box office, Captain Marvel is breaking all sorts of records. Not only is it the first female-led superhero movie to grace the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it is also the third-highest-grossing film directed or co-directed by a woman.

In the first ten days after release on International Women's Day, the movie pulled in $266.2 million domestically and $760 million worldwide. It is poised to blow past $400 million domestically before it leaves theatres, potentially

surpassing Wonder Woman to become the highest grossing female-led superhero movie ever.

Box office aside, Captain Marvel is a fantastic movie that was a blast to watch. Brie Larson was excellently cast, and her character’s take-charge attitude was inspiring to watch. Carol Danvers is never treated as less-than because she’s a woman, which is super refreshing to see onscreen. There were several other strong, well-written and well-developed female roles, like Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening).

There are a lot of other reasons I loved the film--it passes the Bechdel test, has no love plotline, the 90’s fashion and soundtrack--but most of all it’s just fun to watch, plain and simple. It delivers a powerful message and fascinating plot twist that intertwines with our heroine’s own identity crisis, which the audience learns about alongside the characters of the film. If you were having any doubts, go see Captain Marvel as soon as you can. You won’t regret it.
