A Splash Of Seasoning: A Pinch Of Spring

It’s the time of year again to start thinking about when spring will hopefully come. Whether or not the weather feels like spring, spring officially starts March 20th. With the start of spring means spring activities and holidays such as Easter and April Fool’s Day. A Splash of Seasoning has you covered on all you need to know about spring and spring holidays.

Spring brings the celebration of Easter which we know as the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The origins of Easter date back to the beginning of Christianity and it is the second oldest Christian observance after the Sabbath. The name Easter is believed to come from the greek word Eostara meaning the goddess of rebirth.

On Easter sunday many families attend Easter Mass and then after gather

together to celebrate the return of Jesus Christ. When thinking of Easter many people think of Easter eggs and the Easter bunny and, those two symbols both represent fertility and life. Many families with younger children celebrate Easter by filling up Easter eggs and hiding them outside for children to have an Easter egg hunt.

April Fool’s is a day of playing pranks on your friends and family. Many love to take this opportunity to play tricks on others.

This holiday is believed to be originated with Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. A cook is tricked by a fox on, what readers interpreted as, March 32nd or April 1st. Which lead April 1st to be the day of playing tricks.

April Fools day is mostly celebrated in the Western World. Despite being popular since the 19th century April Fools day has not become a national holiday in any country.

April Fools day is mostly celebrated by playing a prank on someone and then shouting “April Fools”. Sometimes media resources choose to participate in this holiday by publishing a fake news article. They will typically clarify at the end of the article or the day after it was published.

We asked the students and staff if they participate in April Fool’s day activities and then asked them if they had any fun prank ideas. We got a range of responses with various pranks, some ideas were similar to popular ideas found online like “instead of mayonnaise, put toothpaste on it,” “make cookies but replace the sugar portion with salt,” and “put a hair tie around the sink spray nozzle so that it presses the button down causing it to spray everywhere when you turn the sink on.” However, we also got some unique responses like “chucking dog poop at someone I don’t like,” “sticky door handles, fake gluten free labels, fake no peanut labels, and lemonade with laxatives,” and “Plastic wrap the whole classroom, tepee the halls, plastic wrap toilets and urinals men’s restroom only.”
