Pop Culture Corner: Venom Movie Divides Audiences
If you’ve been paying any sort of attention to the movies coming out lately, you’ve definitely heard about Venom. A spin-off movie about the Marvel character of the same name, Venom follows disgraced journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as he learns how to live with the gooey black alien “symbiote” that possesses him. He’s on a quest to take down the Evil Businessman that cost him his job, Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), and several bad guys get eaten along the way. If you haven’t seen the movie, that’s just about all you need to know.

The movie was panned by critics across the board, initially earning an abysmal 28% from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes (although that number is up to 30% now), and two out of five stars from Empire. The audience reviews tell a different tale, though, with 89% of Rotten Tomatoes users reacting positively, and 95% of Google users giving it a “thumbs up.”
I’m gonna keep it real with y’all, I had a blast watching this movie. Sure, there were some plot holes and clunky dialogue, but the movie was full of hilarious moments and riveting action sequences. And isn’t that why we go to superhero movies in the first place--to have fun without over analyzing every little thing?
Maybe we’ve all gotten a little spoiled with how excellently executed the Marvel Cinematic Universe is, but when it comes down to it, Venom is a fun (and funny) movie. Its plot is straightforward, the characters get the job done, and Venom the symbiote has a secret knack for comedic timing.
