Pop Culture Corner: Family Ties and Fan Questions in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

“Darkness rises... and light to meet it,” a gravelly voice murmurs in the new TV spot for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. The second movie of the third (and final) Star Wars trilogy, The Last Jedi will follow the storyline that started with The Force Awakens (2015).

The voice in question belongs to Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), the series’ mysterious new villainous mastermind. And he isn’t the only character with secrets, either.

Audiences were left wondering about the parentage of Rey- the plucky new female lead, played by the brilliant Daisy Ridley. Some fans are insistent that she is Luke Skywalker’s daughter, others say she is descended from Obi Wan Kenobi. Still more think she’s from a family that has yet to be introduced to the Star Wars universe. Whatever theory you believe, we may soon find out the truth- it is rumored that The Last Jedi will reveal who Rey’s parents are, and why she was left on Jakku.

There are still a few more pressing questions that fans are dying to have answered: Has Luke Skywalker taken a turn for the Dark Side? Why is there not more footage of the beloved Finn in those trailers? Will Kylo Ren come back to the Light like Leia hopes? And most importantly, where can I buy a porg? I’d sell my soul for one of those critters. (Google it, they’re adorable.)

All of these questions will (hopefully) be answered this coming December.

Until then, may the Force be with you.
